HIGHER THE HOMOCYSTEINE LEVELS MORE SEVERE THE OSA

RISE IN PLASMA HOMOCYSTEINE LEVELS , ARE DIRECTLY ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASED SEVERITY IN SLEEP APNEA DISORDER.

Key Points...

  • Those with at least 15 µmol/L plasma homocysteine had a high concentration.

  • The likelihood for having OSA at an 8-year follow-up went up by 0.98% with a higher baseline homocysteine concentration.

Adults with elevated plasma homocysteine concentrations had greater apnea-hypopnea index scores, signaling more severe sleep apnea, according to results published in 'European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology'.

HOMOCYSTEINE LEVELS IN BLOOD

Homocysteine is an amino acid. Amino acids are molecules that your body uses to make proteins. In a healthy person, homocysteine levels are around five to 15 micromoles per liter (mcmol/L).

FOOD THAT ELEVATE HOMOCYCTEINE LEVELS

Elevated homocysteine levels can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of atherosclerosis and blood clotting. It can also impact brain function, bone health, and mood. Foods that can raise homocysteine levels include red meat, dairy products, processed foods, and alcohol.

FOOD THAT HELP IN REDUCTION OF HOMOCYCTEIN

  1. Eat enough fish, eggs, meat, or milk for B12. ...

  2. Eat your greens and beans. ...

  3. Have a clove of garlic a day. ...

  4. Cut back on coffee. ...

  5. Limit your alcohol. ...

  6. Reduce your stress. ...

  7. Stop smoking. ...

  8. Avoid medication (if possible) than interferes with B12 absorption.

“Homocysteine as a predictor of the AHI can be easily accessed through an affordable test and can contribute to the diagnosis of OSA by indicating the need for more specific tests, such as polysomnography, the gold standard test for OSA diagnosis,”

By Monica L. Andersen, PhD, professor at the Federal University of São Paulo.

“Based on current studies, it is not possible to establish a causal relationship between OSA and elevated concentrations of homocysteine, but we have found an association between higher levels of this amino acid and the aggravation of OSA as said by Monica L. Andersen.

Take away message here is , by regulating Homocysteine levels in plasma may help in reducing the severity of OSA .
